One year. Three hundred and sixty five days. What a difference a year can make. You know how sometimes things just seem to work out for a reason; that the path you start down, while once invisible, magically appears with each step forward you take, propelling you further down the road? It’s like every cobblestone is laid out specifically for you, but the pavers are only put into place if you continue forward. That’s how this year has been for me.
My journey as a romance author began one year ago. At this time in 2014, my husband left for three months to receive training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Yes, the real Federal Bureau of Investigations. The same base made famous by Clarisse in Silence of the Lambs.
I had been playing around with the idea of publishing a novel for a while, having been told by friends who know us that our relationship and love story – while fairytale in nature – is inspiring and others would be fascinated to read a book about it. Sometimes our own lives are larger than fiction.
My goal was to finish my novel, polish it the best I could, and get it published. I wanted this to be my husband’s anniversary present. Two weeks after his return I got an acceptance email from Bookstrand Publishing saying they wanted to publish my novel and it was set to be released the same week as our anniversary in July.
Fortunately for me, my novel was released while I was out of the country. I chose not to read any reviews just in case my book bombed. I didn’t want to ruin my trip. But when I returned, to my surprise, my average rating was 4 out of 5 stars, and readers not only liked my story, but loved it and my characters, too. They got it. Got what I was trying to say and the message I was trying to convey. Yes, it reads like a memoir at times, because it was inspired by true events in my own life.
I know I’m no award-winning writer and even rereading my first book now, I can see areas I would like to change, but Book 1, WALK WITH ME, is just the beginning of Kenna and Donovan’s story. This book establishes the foundation for these complex characters and the emotional hurdles they had to jump over to connect with each other.
With enough material to write multiple books, I have three planned for this series. Book 2, TURN TO ME, is slated for release by my publisher next month. Book 2 is about life interfering, as it often does, and challenging this couple’s epic love.
But unbeknown to this young couple actions from Book 1 and Book 2 has set in motion events beyond their control and Book 3 will further test their commitment to each other. A dramatic ending to this legendary love story, Book 3, STAND WITH ME, should be finished and ready for publication by this summer.
I don’t know where or when this journey will end, but as long as this path continues to appear before me I will advance one step at a time, and I hope to see you – my first true fans – continuing along with me.
I plan to reward my fans with first chance at my ARCs (advanced reader copies) before I release them to bloggers and reviewers. But to receive this benefit you need to subscribe to my website at www.kaitlynstone.com. I don’t send out spamy emails, only important announcements, so don’t miss out on free eBooks and special giveaways.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I wish each one of you health, happiness, and a prosperous New Year.
